Description

Tim’s Story

At 24 years of age, Tim was enjoying university life in Brisbane and it seemed his future hopes and dreams were very achievable. Tim was a kind, compassionate, funny and popular young man with heaps of friends.

However in April 2004 Tim’s life changed forever. Tim suffered a severe traumatic brain injury caused by an impact to the head which left him on life support followed by a year in hospital. Although at the time Tim’s prognosis was extremely grim, he has made an inspirational recovery against all medical predictions.

The support of friends and family has significantly contributed to Tim’s recovery, allowing him to pay for private sector therapy as well as attending TAFE.

At the time Tim’s parents Billy and Jenny moved from Rockhampton, his sister Carolyn from Sydney and his brother Peter from London. Together with his family in Brisbane Tim embarked on an epic fight for his life and for a better future which continues to this day.

Today Tim is continuing to improve and is highly motivated towards his own recovery. He is determined to be happy, rebuild his shattered life and enjoy his future.

His goals include being able to live independently and help other young people cope with this terrible injury.

Tim still has hopes and dreams and your generous support will help him fulfil these dreams.

My Next Goal – Tim Martin

Peter Martin and Tanya Hoare are currently training to do the Gold Coast Marathon to help raise money for my ongoing rehabilitation and to help me get set up for the next stage of my life.

In support of them undertaking this challenge to raise money for me, I am in training as well!!

I am aiming to walk unaided at the time Pete and Tanya complete the Gold Coast Marathon. I am going to walk at least 420m, if not further.

With access to enough therapies, aids and trainers I believe I have a good chance of achieving my goals and even, after all this training, being able to think about finding to some part-time work in the future.

Below are some of the weekly expenses I will have in preparation for this challenge and the next stages of my life.

• Personal training session – $75.00 her hour - once a week

• Physiotherapy – $80 per week

• Specialist appointment – Dr Chan from St Andrews hospital is helping me prepare for my own personal marathon.

• Hydrotherapy - $60.00 per session – twice a week.

• Speech - $250.00 per week

• Gymnasium 3 days a week - $20 per visit - $60 per week.

• Support person to transport me and help with my exercise program.

• Annual ski trip with the Sporting wheelies in August $2000.0. This will be my fourth year if I can get there and it is the most fantastic time. I ski on “sit skiis” with an experienced skier to guide me. It feels amazing going down hill, as though I am free.

My Longer Term Goals

I would love to become capable enough to live independently in my own unit, so my great unit at Youngcare could be offered to another young person like me.

I have a lot of hard work to do to achieve this and I know it might take years but I believe I can do it. I am not going to give up.

I am hoping to be able to have an assistance dog, which will be trained like a ‘seeing eye dog’ with all the same laws of access with in the community.

A dog like this would really increase my independence. With a dog to help I would be able to go out by myself, to the football, the movies, or shopping. Maybe even to the pub to meet friends! I don’t drink any more but I love to catch up with people.

An assistance dog takes two years to prepare and costs $25,000.00 to train. These dogs help a lot of people who need help to get out and about.

I do have a lot of plans however my therapists tell me I can achieve these things if I keep on keeping on. I am definitely not giving up!

I am asking for donations and sponsorship in my quest to achieve my goals. ANY AMOUNT WILL HELP AND BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED; EVERY BIT HELPS! I would be EXTREMELY GRATEFUL FOR ANY HELP you could give.

All donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. The Developing Foundation commits 90% of funds raised by or donated to our team, to my medical expenses. The remaining 10% is used by the charity to cover credit card charges and administration.

If you have any time, resources or a skills you can offer, please don't hesitate to contact us, it often amazes people what turns out to be helpful. If anyone who can’t make it with Pete and Tanya would like to walk my part of the marathon with me it will help encourage me.
